Gage by Emilia Hartley

Kaylee was dreaming… she had to have been. One minute she was buying snacks at a local convenience store in preparations for her Netflix marathon, and the next? Some strange man had bitten her. Ever since then she could swear she was on the world’s worst acid trip. How much time had passed? A few hours? Days? Regardless, something was definitely wrong with her. To make matters worse, when she awoke she was alone in an unrecognizable house with a complete stranger… Sexy stranger, but stranger none-the-less…

Maybe Gage wasn’t as fucked as he thought he was. After Archer had mated Joanna his world had fallen apart. How could Archer betray him like that? Gage’s brain had been running at a thousand miles an hour trying to figure out what to do next. Fuck being a third wheel, and there was no way in hell he’d be getting along with Cohen. Would he move back to Illinois and find work? That was probably the only sound option he had…

That is, until he stumbled upon the stray. Archer had mentioned there was a recently turned shifter running around Stonefall. She looked so confused and hungry, he couldn’t just leave the coyote in the alley to die… Though, he probably should have thought ahead to lay out a change of clothes for her. To his defense, he didn’t expect the woman to shift back into human form over night. Regardless, it happened. He didn’t even know her name and yet the beautiful naked mess of a woman caught his bear’s attention. Perhaps he wouldn’t be leaving Stonefall after all…

Sexy shifters and their feisty mates who aren’t shy about loving each other – so, this is an adult, 18+ reader tale.

My Rating:  4 stars

It was very easy to get caught up once again in The Outcast Bears series with Gage’s story.  Although I am a reader who will always suggest reading any series in order, with Gage you really don’t “have” to in order to enjoy it.  Yet, there are plenty of mentions about events that happened in Archer so reading them in order does give you a bit more insight, besides Archer is a great story, too.

Because the story description gives you a very good idea of what to expect in Gage I’m not going to do more than give my impressions and emotional reactions to Gage and Kaylee’s story.  Kaylee is a spitfire – once she got past the whole bitten by a monster and changed into a coyote shifter thing.  While she might not have believed she was invested in Stonefall and wanted nothing but to return home, she soon came to realize that “home” meant Gage.  Her battles for Gage and Cohen were full of fast paced action and cunning wits.  I like this character and hope to see more of her in Cohen’s story as well.  Since we run into characters from the first story, that’s very likely.  Gage is a bear of a man, physically and at times emotionally.  He’s feeling adrift once Archer found his mate again but helping Kaylee has brought out something he didn’t expect to find – a connection with someone outside his family, someone to be proud to stand beside forever – his mate.  He’s gentle when needed with Kaylee and fierce in his protection of her and his family.  I was often amused by him and liked his character very much, even when in a justifiable rampage.  A few unexpected developments will move this series forward and I’m looking forward to Cohen’s story.

I’d recommend Gage and The Outcast Bears series to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader who enjoys action, danger, humor, steamy sexy times and a really good story.
